It is the question we are asked most often, summer and winter alike: what time should you come so as not to miss the sunset? Here is what we tell our guests.
Arrive an hour before
The show does not last ten minutes. The light starts to turn about an hour before the sun touches the horizon: that is when the Atlantic shifts from blue to copper, and Mogador island becomes a silhouette. Arriving then means you have time to settle in, order, and enjoy the whole sequence rather than its final act.
Times change a lot with the season
In Essaouira the sun sets around 6 pm in December and January, close to 7 pm at the equinoxes, and after 8.30 pm in June and July. In practice: book for 5 pm in winter, and 7.15 pm at the height of summer. Call us and the team will confirm the exact time for that day.
Where to sit
The terrace faces due west, straight at the ocean: it is the best seat in the house, and the first to fill up. The tables at the back of the dining room keep the view thanks to the large openings, with the advantage of being sheltered from the wind — a real consideration in Essaouira, where the trade winds often pick up in the late afternoon.
